Catherine of Alexandria

Catherine of Alexandria
(? fourth century)
   Legendary Saint and Martyr.
She is said to have made a protest against the persecution of Christians and in consequence was herself broken on the wheel. The legend only became current in the tenth century, but she was none the less a popular saint in the Middle Ages. Whirling fireworks are still known as Catherine wheels in her honour and she is regarded as one of the Auxiliary Saints.
